June 2010

On the radar - June news from Learning Network NZ

"It is not your aptitude, but your attitude, that determines your altitude," says the preposterously named Zig Ziglar.

This month our theme is 'Reach for the Stars' and it's all about aiming high and striving for excellence; and celebrating Matariki too.

Each month I have fun sourcing quotations and pictures to display in our centre. Click here for some nice achievement quotations you could use to keep your students motivated.

Read on for what's HOT at LNNZ......

STRATOSPH-ERIC THINKERS
Picked up an Innovative Teachers' Companion lately? If you love all the great thinking tools inside, you'll love one of the main brains behind them, Eric Frangenheim (pictured).

Eric's solid strategies for higher order thinking are delivered with a liberal dose of humour and at a pace for those who've had three coffees in a row- he's fast, fun and furiously engaging.

He's back in Auckland for Creating the Thinking Classroom and Strategies for Cooperative Thinking in late June.

All participants receive a FREE one-month subscription to the online resource www.teacherpd.com.au, which contains a huge collection of vodcasts, templates and activities for your classroom.
LEADING EDGE RESOURCES FOR YOUR SCHOOL
Well what an exciting time Faye and I had in Melbourne: the shopping, the food and oh! that’s the right the Hawker Brownlow Thinking and Learning Conference. I don’t think I could choose a favourite speaker but I was like a sponge with the ones that I was lucky enough to hear.

On my return some great books have sprung to light and two in particular have already made an impact:We have already sold out of the first shipment of both so email me now to secure your copy from the next batch.

Just released too, a fantastic new series called Leading Edge. These books are edited by well respected authors and educators like Robert Marzano, David Sousa and Richard Dufour, and the contributors confront the important issues that affect teachers, leaders and, most importantly, student success.

Regards
Dorne (Resource Manager)
THE GREAT SNIFF TEST
Congratulations to Leandro Piantelli of Henderson North School, who won a PD voucher worth $295 for correctly sniffing and naming the seven spices in our recent Great Sniff Test competition. Leandro obviously knows his cardomom from his coriander. Thanks to everyone who sniffed and entered.
ROOMS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Did you know that our lovely new(-ish! We've been here over a year now!) centre in Henderson has great spaces for hire. Ideal for training seminars, planning meetings and mini-conferences. Our rates are very competitive and we can organise a range of catering and AV options.

We've added a 'room hire' button and page to our website, so have a look and spread the word. Hope to see you here soon.
