Keynote & workshop descriptions:

Hello, is there anybody in there? Understanding the developing brain
In 1990 President Bush (senior) signed a proclamation dedicating the 90’s as the ‘Decade of the Brain’. This presidential act witnessed more worldwide research in the neurological sciences than at any other time in history and also saw the merging of neuroscience with many other fields of research and inquiry. As a result of all of this work, education has been reinvigorated with new understandings of how the brain grows and develops. Moreover, some of the newest research available suggests we may have to radically rethink how we might engage with 21st century minds if we are truly sincere in delivering quality educational experiences and attaining quality educational outcomes.

Sugar and spice and all things gender-specific: Enhancing learning environments through understanding neurology and 'brainsex'
Are you aware that neuroscientists continue to uncover a range of anatomical, chemical and functional differences between the brains of boys and girls? What might you do differently if you were armed with an understanding of the neurological differences between boys and girls and how this might impact on behaviour and learning? This workshop looks to uncover some of this information by focusing on contemporary research into how the brain develops, the differences that exist between boys and girls and some of the implications this has for educators as we engage with the students around us while they grow and learn.

Where to now? Educating in the 21st century
Increasingly there is growing recognition that our world has changed exponentially and on an enormous scale. Moreover, our understanding of the brain at the intersection of a technologically rampant society suggests that 21st century learners are unlike previous generations of students. This workshop looks to unpack some of this information by examining the changing nature of society and technology, the resultant changes in how students engage with the world around them and what this might mean for educators. The underlying message from the research used to frame this workshop is that pedagogy and curriculum will need a major overhaul if it truly hopes to engage with 21st century minds.
