Dr. Tongati’o will outline the Pasfika Education Plan 2013 - 2017.

C: Summer Charlesworth - Risky Business; Why Adolescence is not a Problem, but an Opportunity.
Play and risk are essential components of growth and learning. This session will explore the very notions of why our Middle Schoolers have much to teach us about how to navigate and change the world! We will enter into discussion around how we can work with our students to leverage social media for social justice, and incorporate play and creativity into learning outcomes. The core focus is on how we can promote optimistic, positive and productive learning environments in the Middle School.

2.15 Afternoon tea / Sponsor time
2.45 Workshops:

A: Angela White - Managing and sustaining change in a school environment
This workshop documents the implementation of change in a school environment, through the use of Art Costa’s Habits of Mind. It demonstrates and give examples of the specific steps taken to implement, integrate and sustain whole school change.

B: Summer Charlesworth - People and Pedagogy over Places and Spaces
This workshop will outline some of the most recent findings in the study of learning in contemporary learning spaces; The impact offlexible learning spaces on student learning and achievement. Much of the research is still in a anecdotal phase, so we will explore a snapshot of the discourse around this emerging trend in schools; open and flexible learning spaces. My research gets to the core of what really matters; sound pedagogies and successful learning situations. We will explore the question of how do you know? when it comes to learning and success for students.

C: Carolyn Stuart - Collaborating, connecting & communicating: building digital competency in our schools
In these times of great technological change, school communities grow together when they have shared vision, agreed ways of working together, high levels of relational trust and an understanding of how digital technologies can be used to engage, grow and inspire their learners. Leaders need to develop new strategies for building digital competency in their learning organisations, and new ways of collaborating, connecting, and communicating.

10.45 Workshops:

A: Ann Milne - Colouring in the white spaces
“Great team work is about compelling purpose, engaging tasks and great relationships.” So is great leadership! In a school system predominantly driven by Pakeha norms, what sort of school leadership is required to foster the conditions that empower young people to retain their cultural identity and to have this validated and valued throughout their school day? What personal and professional journeys effectively equip educators to understand how a whole system can advantage some students and disadvantage others, and to personally reflect on our own part in this process?

No matter how many initiatives, strategic plans or testing regimes we introduce, schooling will not become more equitable for Maori and Pasifika youth until paradigm shifts happen in the way we think about and define ‘achievement’ and ‘success.’ How can we change our current approach to ensure equitable outcomes for Maori learners and consider alternative approaches to the managerial, technical, and limited academic focus now rampant in our schools?

This workshop leads into the school visit to Kia Aroha College where delegates will see the programme in action and hear from a group of students who have recently presented their own research on structuring the school as a whanau to the American Education Research Association Conference in Vancouver.

B: John Shackleton - Inspire your team: Coaching for Success
Join John to explore coaching for success in further depth, including six essential practical coaching tips, and how to apply the coaching model immediately for outstanding results.
