Target audience: all primary and secondary educators, curriculum leaders & school leaders interested in Habits of Mind. No prior experience with HOM required.

In 2009 we are offering a seven-day professional learning series in conjunction with the Habits of Mind Network (HOMNET): A Pathway to Mindfulness.

This two-day workshop is the first module of the series - participants can choose to do only this module or continue on with Modules 2 and 3 (see 'Associated Courses' below). Discounted fees apply for attending further modules.

Module 1: Introducing Habits of Mind to Teachers and Classrooms

All teachers, whether new to the Habits of Mind or more experienced, will benefit from this highly engaging, practical hands-on two day workshop. This workshop provides both an introduction for teachers who are ‘testing the waters’, as well as a solid grounding for schools taking a long term view with Habits of Mind.

Participants are introduced to all 16 Habits of Mind through a series of practical and engaging examples and are given a wide range of strategies that can be easily applied back in the classroom. To help ensure success back at school, a number of common misunderstandings are addressed. Importantly the idea of developing the Habits of Mind is fully explored so that teachers have the required knowledge to ensure that the Habits of Mind can be sustained, and not just be a “one week wonder,” in the classroom.

Key Workshop Outcomes

Participants will:
  • Become familiar with the 16 Habits of Mind;
  • Understand the 5 dimensions that describe the development of the Habits of Mind:
  • Explore a meaningful and practical framework for teaching thinking;
  • Develop a repertoire of strategies relevant to each of the Habits of Mind;
  • Understand where the HOM fit in the curriculum;
  • Trial and share activities and resources for introducing the Habits of Mind to students in the classroom;
  • Explore pathways for future learning related to Habits of MindExtensive workshop notes are supplied and further online resources are identified throughout the workshop

    All participants become part of the Habits of Mind Network (HOMNET). This network provides a regular e-news letter, online discussion and opportunities for online collaboration with teachers working with HOM around the world. (see www.mindfulbydesign.com for more information). All resources generated by teachers in the Habits of Mind Network are freely shared. The expectation is that participants will contribute material they produce to the HOMNET resource library.

    Important registration information:

    This module (or comparable experience with HOM - check with us if unsure) is a prerequisite for Modules 2 and 3 of the Habits of Mind Professional Learning series.

    As this programme aims for the sustained development of HOM in your school, a minimum of two teachers from each participating school must attend.

    Third and subsequent enrolments are discounted to $420 per module per person.

    Participants who attend Module 1 and also enrol for Modules 2 and 3 at the same time will receive the discounted fee of $420 per person for the subsequent modules.

    If enrolling online these discounted prices will not appear in your online shopping basket, but will be applied to your invoice.
