Waitakere Education Sector Trust - WEST

Description:
A community / education partnership for Waitakere.

The purpose of WEST is to “facilitate projects between Waitakere City Council, the Ministry of Education, Waitakere City schools, Maori and other education providers, that will maximise educational and community opportunities and outcomes in Waitakere City"

WEST Trust deed 2001
With 67 schools, 160 early childhood providers, 26 private training enterprises, 15 community education providers, 15 Maori education providers, 5 tertiary providers and the City Council, co-ordination within the local education sector is totally essential. The Maori community, the Pacific community, Tertiary providers, Private Education Providers, community education and pre-schools are now key WEST partners.

What is West currently doing?
West is initiating and leading the development of a learning and education strategic action plan for Waitakere City that will meet the objectives of the education and community stakeholders of the city.

The purpose of the plan is to develop creative and innovative ways of educators and communities working more effectively together to ensure the best possible learning experiences and outcomes for all people in Waitakere City (from early childhood education through compulsory schooling to tertiary and community based education).

  • West wants to create a better understanding of key learning issues and needs in Waitakere City.
  • We want to encourage and promote a shared understanding of good practice across the education sector.
  • We want to coordinate service and delivery between education and learning stakeholders and the community.
  • Develop a Learning Warehouse
The purpose of this is to provide easy access to education information to the general public - focusing on people who do not currently access information (priority learners). We want the people of Waitakere City to be aware of all of the learning opportunities available and where they can go to access this.
  • Development of a framework consistent with Life Long Sustainable Learning
WEST is working alongside the Waitakere City Council to support this development.
  • Promote and celebrate Waitakere City Learning and Schools
We are implementing a plan of action that raises the profile of WEST, celebrates West Auckland schools and promotes the education sector.
