Building Cultural capability for teaching and learning – Cultural competencies for classroom teachers

This workshop will explore those beliefs and actions teachers develop within their teaching approaches, across the curriculum, when they focus on the practices of Ako, Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, Waananga  and Tangata Whenuatanga and tuakana teina

Our day together, through the sharing and development examples, discussion, workshops, roundtables and resources, will focus on the 3 key areas of:

  • Cultural Competence (ability to understand and to use the learner’s culture/s as a building block to learn and teach)
  • Cultural Responsiveness (changing practices to engage all students in their learning and make the classroom a positive learning place for all students)
  • Growing teacher understanding of the principles of Taitakako and the practices we develop as a result. This includes the publication TÄTAIAKO: CULTURAL COMPETENCIES FOR TEACHERS OF MÄORI LEARNERS and the Education Council support resource for teachers

Through a range of contexts we will explore how we can develop our own cultural capability as teachers in order to strengthen student wellbeing, hauora and achievement. Together we will investigate the different learning environments. approaches and practices teachers can use to effectively build and grow relationships with our students. Throughout each session of our day together teachers will be able to stimulate their own thinking and engage in discussion about their current practice and how responsive that practice is to the specific learning and cultural needs of Maori learners.
