This workshop will explore:
- the importance of daily oral language opportunities, sensory experiences and play
- effective ways of developing our children’s speaking, listening, thinking and questioning skills
- how to develop literacy skills through an integrated, cross curricular, thematic and real- life approach: practical links between literacy and topic/inquiry/science, literacy and maths, literacy and the arts (role play, movement, visual arts)
- the importance of foundation skills: memory, visual, auditory, gross motor and fine motor skills and continuing to build on these skills whilst delivering the primary school curriculum
- the importance of providing opportunities for ‘making marks!’ celebrating the beginnings of writing
- sharing ideas for children’s writing and spelling experiences and different approaches we may have
- using the Literacy Progressions documents and the Supporting English Language Learning in Primary Schools (SELLIPS), plus other useful resources and further reading
- visual resources, props and useful websites
