Join leading neuroscience experts Nathan Wallis and Kathryn Berkett to unpack the research on how the brain works and how neuroscience can better inform our interactions with others. They will be joined by Pio Terei
‘Change Your Brain – Change Your Life!’ takes a broader perspective than Nathan’s previous talks.
This new discussion explores the inherent ability in everyone’s brain to be able to change the ‘wiring’ of their brain and thereby improve their level of happiness, well-being and overall quality of life.
Wellbeing can be seen neurologically to comprise of two main components. One is all the things we do that serve to make us well and happy, and secondly all the things we do to mitigate stress and calm the human stress response system. Both are needed for true wellbeing. Nathan will explore with participants exactly what the research says are the most effective strategies to achieve both of these – in your own life (lead by example!) and also as applicable to your educational context.
Once we understand the stress response activation and how to keep well and happy from Nathan, we will build on this to consider long term strategies for wellness. The age old concept of conditioning (Pavlov and his Dog) will be used to explore how we can develop a more effective and efficient calming capacity. We will also learn the importance of engaging ourselves in ‘multiple moments of tolerable stress’ throughout our lifetime. This increases our physical capacity to activate that calm, and improves our ability to feel calm more often, faster, and under higher levels of stress.
