Jo Williams
Over the last 10 years Jo Williams has facilitated at Kohia Education centre, as well as in the North Shore, working as a mentor and advisor with PCT’s as part of their beginning teacher Induction and Mentoring programme.

Alongside this role she also runs courses for new entrant teachers and early childhood teachers in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand. She believes that new entrant teaching is a specialised area which is why she designed a course called Getting Started in the New Entrant Classroom, particularly aimed at teachers at the start of the year or who take on a new entrant class mid year. Her strengths also lie in developing early numeracy and literacy skills and she runs courses in these areas specifically aimed at children aged 4 and 5 years old.

Embedded in Jo’s philosophy is a desire to keep courses practical, realistic and visual with an emphasis on integration across the curriculum. Having been a One Day School teacher and a Small Poppies teacher, she also believes in the importance of fostering inquiring minds and a sense of wonder in children and developing a questioning and thinking culture in the learning environment.

Jo trained as a primary school teacher in the UK and has taught children from Y0 through to Y6. The majority of her 20 years teaching experience has been in the New Zealand primary school with Y0/1 children and she has also taught in early childhood centres. Due to this she is passionate about making links between ECE and the new entrant classroom and offers consultations and runs courses that focus on transition to school and the importance of developing and building on the foundation skills for children.

Jo taught new entrant children at Owairaka primary School in Mount Albert from 2000 through to 2006 and was the team leader for the Junior team. In 2007 she was the ESOL teacher. Due to this and her experience working in a multi- cultural environment, she offers consultation around ways to teach and assist English Language Learners and their families.
