Middle Leadership Essentials: Core Skills for Middle Leaders
Are you a middle leader? Want to grow your effectiveness with the right tools, mindsets, and strategies?
This practical, hands-on programme is designed for middle leaders who want to build confidence and clarity in their leadership role. Through a blend of interactive face-to-face workshops and online sessions, you’ll develop the skills that matter most for leadership.
Each term there will be one face to face session at Learning Network 9.30-3pm and one ONLINE session after school 3.30-5pm

We’ll explore how to:
- Understand Your Role: explore the key dimensions of the middle leader’s role in schools and develop an understanding of the strengths that you bring to your work.
- Build an Effective Team: establish shared norms, role clarity, and a sense of shared purpose and commitment in teams. Learn how to manage conflict with confidence.
- Lead Change with Purpose: build momentum, reduce resistance, and support your team through the process of improvement and innovation.
- Support Growth and Accountability: learn how to hold professional conversations, mentor and coach others, and embed a culture of reflection and responsibility.
Over the course of the year, you’ll also develop a toolkit of practical tools for making effective decisions; managing projects; running purposeful meetings, and taking care of wellbeing.

Mark is an educator by background and has worked across the New Zealand education system for nearly three decades as a teacher, school leader and consultant. Mark initially trained as a primary teacher before working in the secondary sector for 15 years, most recently as a foundation Deputy Principal at Albany Senior High School, the country’s first ILE high school. The majority of Mark’s work in schools is based on leadership development and supporting schools to implement change projects large and small. Mark holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne on change leadership, and he has published widely nationally and internationally on how to ensure change efforts a successful in schools.
